Details: Black cherry is a fast growing, large shade tree that is considered to be highly valuable to wildlife. Abundant, fragrant white flowers bloom in spring and provide nectar and pollen for native bees, bumblebees, honey bees and butterflies. In late summer the purple black fruits ripen and attract over 30 species of songbirds. You can also use them for jams and jellies but are too bitter fresh. In the autumn, the foliage takes on a yellow to rose hue. Black cherry wood is prized by woodworkers. It can be easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.
Interesting Fact: Black cherry’s wood is considered very valuable for its color; it is used for furniture, instruments, paneling, toys and handles.
